Road Tolls and Fees
Road tax fee
From 1 January 2026, the Icelandic government requires all rental vehicles to pay a road usage tax. As the tax-liable party under Icelandic law, the rental company is responsible for remitting this fee to the authorities — it is a statutory charge collected by the rental company, not a fee imposed directly on the renter.
We include this as a mandatory charge of €10 per day, added as a separate line item excluding VAT on top of your rental price.
The road tax fee is collected at the time of booking or at the start of your rental. As outlined in our Terms and Conditions, it may be charged to the credit or debit card provided at pick-up.

Vaðlaheiðargöng Tunnel
The Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel is Iceland's only toll road, located just east of Akureyri in the north. This 7.5 km tunnel runs along the Ring Road (Route 1) and offers a faster, safer alternative to the Víkurskarð mountain pass — particularly useful in winter.
How It Works
There are no toll booths. As you pass through, your licence plate is automatically recorded and payment is completed online at tunnel.is. Payment can be made up to 24 hours before or after your passage, and each paid trip is valid for a 24-hour window.
If payment is not made within 24 hours of passing through, an invoice is sent to the vehicle owner (your rental company), which may result in additional handling fees charged to you.
Important Reminders
- Enter your rental vehicle's licence plate number carefully — payments are non-refundable if the wrong plate is entered.
- Select single or round trip as needed.
- Payments made outside the 24-hour window are non-refundable.

Pay your toll at tunnel.is.

Airport Parking and Fees
Keflavik International Airport (KEF) offers parking options for both short and long stays, with clear signage and easy access to the terminal. All car parks are operated by Isavia and are open 24/7.
Types of Parking at KEF
KEF has three car parks. P1 and P2 are short-term lots located roughly 30 meters from the terminal — ideal for quick drop-offs and pick-ups, with the first 15 minutes free. P3 is the long-term lot, approximately 300 meters from the terminal and the most cost-effective option for multi-day trips. A Meet & Greet valet service is also available for maximum convenience.
Booking and Reservations
Advance booking is available and recommended — pre-booking secures your space and guarantees a lower rate than paying on arrival. Bookings can be made up to 14 weeks ahead and modified or cancelled up to 2 hours before arrival. Book at kefairport.com/parking.
Tips for Airport Parking
Book as early as possible, especially during peak summer months (June–August). When booking, set your check-in and check-out times three hours around your scheduled flight to avoid overstay charges. For accessible parking, contact [email protected] in advance with your permit details.
Penalties and Additional Charges
If you exit without paying, you have 48 hours to settle the balance online. After that, an invoice is issued to your online bank with an added service fee of ISK 1,490. Overstaying your booked period incurs additional charges at the applicable overstay rate. To pay automatically on exit, register your plate and card at autopay.io.
