Summer opens up nearly all of Iceland’s roads — including highland F-roads, which are accessible only to 4x4 or AWD vehicles and only during this season (usually from late June to early September). Why Summer Is the Best Time to Drive in Iceland

24-Hour Daylight

Thanks to the Midnight Sun around the June solstice, you can drive, explore, and sightsee nearly around the clock. This extended daylight improves visibility, reduces fatigue risks, and allows for flexible travel plans.

Ideal Road Conditions

With no snow or ice on most roads, driving is smoother and safer than in other seasons. Major routes like the Ring Road (Route 1) and Golden Circle are fully open and well maintained.

Expanded Route Access

In summer, nearly all of Iceland's road network becomes available, including F-roads in the highlands. These rugged mountain roads are only accessible with a 4x4 or AWD and require careful planning, but offer access to some of Iceland’s most remote and breathtaking landscapes.

Summer brings more visitors and free-roaming sheep. Sheep often cross roads unexpectedly, especially in rural areas. So always stay alert, drive cautiously, and reduce speed when animals are nearby.

Iceland’s landscapes are photogenic from every angle, but stopping on the road is dangerous and illegal. Always pull into designated lay-bys, parking zones, or safe turnouts before taking photos.

Typical daytime temperatures range from 10–15 °C (50–59 °F) during June and July, with cooler nights.
Rain is less frequent than in spring or fall, and strong wind gusts are rarer—but still possible, especially along coastlines and mountain passes.
Storms and road closures are uncommon in summer, which is why many travelers find this the safest and most comfortable season for self-driving.

Road Conditions

Paved roads like Route 1 (the Ring Road) are in excellent condition year-round and easily navigable by 2WD cars in summer.
Gravel roads—common in rural and less populated regions—can be uneven or loose. Always slow down when transitioning from paved to gravel surfaces to maintain control.

F-Road Access in Summer

F-roads (mountain roads through the Highlands) typically open by late June and close in early September, depending on weather and snowmelt.

What You Need for a Safe Summer Drive

Choosing the Right Vehicle

For most summer itineraries—including the Ring Road, Golden Circle, and popular coastal routes—a 2WD compact or economy car is more than sufficient.
If you're planning to explore the Icelandic Highlands (e.g. Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, or F-roads like F208), a 4x4 or AWD vehicle is required by law. These roads involve rough terrain and unbridged river crossings.

Fuel Access & Strategy

Gas stations are common along main routes and in towns, but they become infrequent in rural or remote areas, especially the East Fjords and Westfjords.
Always fill up when you can, especially before entering sparsely populated regions.
Most stations accept international cards and are open 24/7 via automated pumps.

Tires & Equipment

Summer tires are the standard from late April through October. Studded winter tires are not needed and not permitted in the warmer months.
Every Saga vehicle is equipped with a spare tire or repair kit and a jack, especially important if you’ll be driving on gravel roads.
Drive slowly when transitioning from paved to gravel surfaces to avoid stone chips and tire damage.

What to Pack in the Car

Layered clothing: Even in July, summer nights can drop below 10 °C (50 °F). A windproof and waterproof jacket is highly recommended.
Sunglasses & sunscreen: The Midnight Sun is strong and constant—prepare for glare and UV exposure.
Snacks, water & a power bank: If you're heading to less-traveled routes, prepare like you won’t find a service stop for hours.
